Staying in the north of Malta puts some of the island’s best beaches, coastal views and attractions right on your doorstep. Here are ten experiences worth adding to your list.
1. Spend a day at Golden Bay
Swim, relax on the sand and stay until sunset — Golden Bay is particularly beautiful as the sun disappears over the Mediterranean.
2. Walk down to Għajn Tuffieħa
Take in one of Malta’s most impressive coastal landscapes before heading down the steps for a swim.
3. Explore Mellieħa
Wander through the old village, visit the impressive Mellieħa Parish Church and enjoy the views across Mellieħa Bay.
4. Visit Popeye Village
Originally built as the film set for the 1980 movie Popeye, the colourful village at Anchor Bay has become one of Malta’s most recognisable attractions.
5. Take a boat to Comino
Spend a day swimming in the Blue Lagoon and exploring the waters around the tiny island of Comino.
6. Walk the St Paul’s Bay promenade
Start in St Paul’s Bay and follow the coastline through Bugibba towards Qawra. Stop for coffee, lunch or a swim along the way.
7. Get out on the water in Bugibba
Try a jet ski, parasailing, paddleboarding or a boat trip from Bugibba Square for a completely different view of Malta’s northern coastline.
8. Visit the Malta National Aquarium
Located at Qawra Point, the aquarium is an easy family-friendly option and particularly useful when you want a break from the summer sun.
9. Discover St Paul’s Islands
Visible just offshore from St Paul’s Bay, these small islands are closely connected with the story of St Paul’s shipwreck in Malta and make a beautiful backdrop for a boat trip around the bay.
10. Take the ferry to Gozo
Malta’s sister island is close enough for a day trip. Catch the ferry from Ċirkewwa and spend the day discovering Gozo’s villages, beaches, countryside and historic capital, Victoria.
Our tip: Don’t try to see everything at once. Malta is best enjoyed slowly — spend a morning exploring, stop somewhere local for lunch and leave enough time for an afternoon swim and a sunset drink by the sea.
