Malta’s Best Beaches & Swimming Spots

With warm Mediterranean summers and some of the clearest water in Europe, a day by the sea is an essential part of any Malta holiday. From sandy beaches to rocky coves and natural swimming spots, there’s somewhere to swim for almost every kind of day.

Golden Bay

One of Malta’s best-known sandy beaches, Golden Bay combines a wide stretch of sand with beautiful sunsets and plenty of facilities. It’s particularly good for families or anyone wanting to spend an entire day at the beach.

Għajn Tuffieħa

Just next to Golden Bay but with a completely different atmosphere, Għajn Tuffieħa is surrounded by natural countryside and reached by a long staircase down to the bay. The walk back up takes some effort, but the setting is worth it.

Mellieħa Bay

Malta’s largest sandy beach is one of the easiest choices for families. The water remains relatively shallow for some distance, while restaurants, cafés and facilities are close by.

Paradise Bay

Tucked beneath the cliffs near Ċirkewwa, Paradise Bay is a smaller sandy beach with views towards Gozo and Comino. Arrive early during the summer months if you want to find a good spot.

Qawra & St Paul’s Bay

You don’t need a sandy beach to enjoy Malta’s sea. The coastline around Qawra, Bugibba and St Paul’s Bay has numerous rocky swimming spots where ladders lead directly into clear Mediterranean water.

Make a Day of It in Bugibba

If simply lying beside the sea isn’t enough, head to Bugibba Square and get out onto the water. Aquamarine Watersports offers activities including jet skis, parasailing, paddleboarding and boat experiences, making it easy to turn a beach day into something a little more adventurous.

Blue Lagoon, Comino

No Malta swimming guide would be complete without the Blue Lagoon. Its almost impossibly turquoise water makes it one of the islands’ most famous destinations. It gets extremely busy in summer, so an early start is well worth it.

Local tip: Malta isn’t only about sandy beaches. Some of the best swims are from the rocky coastline, so pack swimming shoes and a snorkel and explore beyond the obvious spots.
